A QR code's printed size depends on its data, the printing process and the camera that will read it. There is no single minimum width that guarantees a scan on every phone. Choose a starting size, preserve the clear margin and test a physical proof at the intended distance.
Is 2 x 2 cm a minimum QR code size?
A 2 x 2 cm code is a possible starting point for a simple design that readers hold close to a phone. It is not an absolute minimum or a guarantee. Dense contact data, an added logo, ink spread or a difficult surface may require a larger code. Measure the finished printed result, including its clear margin, before approving it.
The 10:1 distance rule is a planning estimate
Dividing the intended viewing distance by ten gives a rough size to try in a layout. For example, 1 meter divided by ten is 10 centimeters. This is an estimate for a draft, not a QR standard or a scan result measured by qrforprint. Confirm the size with the actual print, camera and lighting.

Module size and the quiet zone
A module is one small square in the QR pattern. DENSO WAVE specifies a clear margin of four modules on every side of a standard QR code. If the pattern contains N modules across and each module is M millimeters wide, the full width with that margin is (N + 8) × M. Source: DENSO WAVE, QR code area and margins.
The margin belongs inside the finished design. Crop marks, bleed and the space outside a cut edge do not replace it. Keep nearby text and background artwork outside the clear area.
DENSO WAVE recommends considering both printer resolution and the scanner's reading limit when choosing module size. For its printing examples, it recommends at least four printer dots per module for stable operation. That is not a guarantee for every phone camera. QR code versions: 21 x 21 to 177 x 177 modules
Standard QR codes run from version 1, with 21 x 21 modules, to version 40, with 177 x 177 modules. Each version adds four modules per side. The generator chooses the version from the content and error correction level. More modules in the same printed square means smaller individual modules. Source: DENSO WAVE, QR versions and capacity.
A 177 x 177 QR code is a module count, not a measurement in pixels or centimeters. With a four module margin on each side it occupies 185 modules across. If a layout uses 0.5 mm per module, the total width is 92.5 mm. This is a calculation example, not a universal minimum or a measured scan guarantee.
What is the maximum printed size?
The module grid has a defined range, but the artwork can be scaled. A larger print still needs to be readable from its intended position. Use a simple vector QR design when enlarging it and check any raster logo or frame separately. A vector file does not correct poor contrast, glare or an inaccessible viewing position.
PNG resolution and vector exports
Effective raster resolution depends on pixel count and placed size. A 600 pixel wide image placed at 2 inches has 300 pixels per inch. Stretching a small PNG does not recover missing detail. Download a suitable file again or use a plain SVG design for scalable geometry.

Check before the print run
- Open the destination and confirm that it is the page you intend to share.
- Print a proof at its final size, using the intended stock and finishing process where possible.
- Place the proof where the code will be used. Check lighting, height, curvature and reflections.
- Scan with the phones your audience uses, from the expected position and angle.
- If scanning is inconsistent, adjust the size, contrast or placement and test a new proof.
